I'm all about meeting my protein goals, and tuna can be an excellent source, but here are a few things you want to watch out for!
Canned tuna can be a convenient source of lean protein but there are a few things you want to watch out for when buying it.Β Here are the two main things I look for.
- MERCURY
Remember the smaller the fish the less mercury it will have so I recommend:
β Staying away from albacore and yellowfin variations.
β Go for skipjack, tongol or light tuna instead.
β Or it should say tested for mercury if is another variation of tuna.
If you arenβt stuck to tuna, sardines, anchovies, and mackerel are SUPER nutritious and packed with omega-3, calcium, zinc, and iron.
- SUSTAINABLE
β Look for words like sustainably caught, sustainably sourced, or have the MSC stamp on it.Β Ideally, you want your tuna to be pole-caught or line-caught, which we definitely prefer over net fishing.
β Donβt be fooled by the words βWild caughtβ.Β This does not mean it is sustainably caughtβ¦ These are big brands trying to confuse you!
My Favorite brand is Wild Planet, and surprisingly the Redmart brand
